West Ham United boss Nuno understands fans’ frustration

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo admitted he understands the frustration from supporters following the club’s heavy 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

The Hammers endured another disappointing afternoon at St James’ Park, with travelling fans making their feelings known at full-time by chanting “You’re not fit to wear the shirt.”

Nuno acknowledged the criticism and accepted responsibility after another difficult outing in what has been a frustrating campaign for the London side.

“I understand, I understand they are disappointed. They saw a team who has been struggling through the season,” Nuno told Sky Sports after the defeat.

“They show their frustrations to me and my decision, we understand them.

“We concede two goals but it was not lost. The way we conceded was poor and we tried to react but it was not enough.

“The mistakes happen. The organisation of the team, too open. It was a very difficult match.”

The defeat leaves West Ham facing increased pressure heading into the final stretch of the season, with performances continuing to fall below expectations.

Despite the criticism from supporters, Nuno refused to directly blame his players for the disappointing display.

When asked if the squad had let him down, the Portuguese coach responded.

“No, not about that. Let’s take a look at the game, we started poor and were soft.

“Let’s try to finish the season with dignity and respect the club. We owe it to the club to try until the end.”

Nuno also admitted the team’s poor start played a major role in the defeat and warned that anxiety within the squad is becoming increasingly visible.

“The start was really bad. We were trying to improve but today was not a step forward.

“We have to realise our situation is very difficult, there is a lot of anxiety and nerves but we have to take responsibility. Let’s try to finish the season with dignity.

“Let’s wait until Tuesday. Let’s see, it is possible but it is difficult.”

West Ham now face a crucial period as they attempt to restore pride and end a turbulent campaign on a more positive note.
