Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has revealed that Amadou Onana could still feature in Wednesday’s Europa League final, although the midfielder must pass a late fitness test before a final decision is made.
Onana has been unavailable since earlier this month due to a calf injury and subsequently missed Villa’s dramatic semi-final comeback victory over Nottingham Forest alongside the club’s last four domestic fixtures.
Speaking ahead of the showdown with Freiburg, Emery confirmed the Belgian international has returned to training but stopped short of guaranteeing his involvement.
“We will decide tomorrow if he feels 100 per cent well. He is an important player for us, but without him and [Boubacar] Kamara, I am confident.”
Villa head into the Europa League final carrying strong momentum and the belief that Emery’s vast European experience could prove decisive once again.
The Spanish coach is already a four-time Europa League winner and now has the chance to guide Villa to their first major European trophy since lifting the European Cup in 1982.
Despite Freiburg’s impressive campaign, Villa enter the final as favourites given their form, squad quality and Emery’s elite pedigree in continental competitions.
The Birmingham club have enjoyed a remarkable rise in recent seasons and now stand just one victory away from writing another unforgettable chapter in their history.
With Onana edging closer to a return, Villa supporters will hope the powerful midfielder can recover in time to strengthen the squad for one of the biggest nights the club has faced in decades.
