Manchester United’s Fernandes wins Premier League award

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been named the Premier League Player of the Season for the 2025-26 campaign.

The Portuguese midfielder has enjoyed an impressive campaign for the Red Devils and was also named the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Season.

The 31-year-old also equalled the Premier League all-time single season assist record in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest last weekend with his 20th league assist of the season, equalling Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne’s haul of 20.

Fernandes, meanwhile, has a chance to rewrite history on Sunday when they face Brighton and Hove Albion if he provides another assist.

He saw off competition from the likes of David Raya, Morgan Gibbs-White, Declan Rice, Antoine Semenyo, Igor Thiago, Gabriel Magalhaes and Erling Haaland to win the award.

Fernandes also became the first Manchester Unite player to win the award since Nemanja Vidic in 2011, joining Peter Schmeichel, Dwight Yorke, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney as other United players to have won the Premier League Player of the Season Award.

Meanwhile, Nico O’Reilly of Manchester City won the Young Player of the Season award ahead of Rayan Cherki, Eli Junior Kroupi and Kobbie Mainoo.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign for the Cityzens, and scored twice in the EFL Cup final to give his side victory over Arsenal, while he was also rewarded with a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man squad to represent England at the 2026 World Cup.

Manchester United will conclude their 2025-26 season on Sunday when they visit the American Express Stadium to face Brighton, hoping for a win to end their season on a high after enjoying a remarkable turnaround under Michael Carrick.
