Real Madrid have completed the signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea on a six-year contract, in a deal worth an initial £47.5m, rising to £51.8m with add-ons.
The Spain international departs Stamford Bridge after four years, having made 163 appearances and won both the Conference League and Club World Cup during his spell in London.
Chelsea originally signed the 27-year-old from Brighton for £63m, and while several clubs were interested, Cucurella was understood to be determined to join Real Madrid, despite previous links with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Manchester City.
He is currently at the World Cup with Spain, who begin their Group H campaign against Cape Verde on Monday.
Cucurella’s time at Chelsea included moments of success but also criticism, particularly around the club’s evolving transfer strategy and squad planning.
He was not considered part of the club’s “untouchable” core alongside players such as Cole Palmer and captain Reece James.
Chelsea issued a brief farewell message following confirmation of his departure.
“Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to thank Marc for his efforts during his time at the club and for the role he played in our recent achievements.
“We wish him every success as he begins the next stage of his career.”
The transfer adds to a busy summer for incoming Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho, with multiple arrivals already secured as part of a wider squad rebuild.
Cucurella’s move is separate from Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who has also been linked with Madrid but remains valued at over £120m by the Premier League club.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are assessing left-back options, with Jorrel Hato emerging as a potential candidate for the role ahead of next season.
