RB Leipzig confirm Martin Demichelis as new head coach

RB Leipzig have confirmed the appointment of Martin Demichelis as new head coach on a two-year deal as a replacement for Ole Werner.

Werner led Leipzig to a return to the UEFA Champions League but has been replaced by Demichelis, who will now lead the club beginning from next season.

The 45-year-old was previously head coach of Spanish side Mallorca, before his appointment at the German club.

“With Martín Demichelis, we are gaining a head coach who has gained experience as a player and coach in Europe, South America, and North America, working at the highest level”, Leipzig confirmed Demichelis’ appointment.

“Martín combines a clear playing philosophy with high intensity and professional expertise. We are convinced that he will give our team important impetus and play a key role in shaping the club’s continued success.”

Demichelis won four Bundesliga titles during his playing days at Bayern Munich, featuring 174 times between 2003 and 2010.

He also previously coached in the Bayern’s reserve side for three years, aiming to gain more valuable experience.

Speaking after his appointment, the former Argentina international expressed delight at the opportunity and is raring to go once more at his new role.

“I was convinced by the discussions with the management and the sporting vision. RB Leipzig is an ambitious club with a clear idea, outstanding talent, and the ambition to continuously develop at the highest level. This challenge is precisely what attracted me”, Demichelis said.

“I come with great respect for the work that has been done here. I want to build on that and continue along the path we’ve started together with the team. I want to create a team that plays courageous, intense, and attractive football, takes responsibility, and inspires the people of Leipzig with its passion.”

The Argentine will now lead Leipzig into the 2026-27 season, as they look to challenge Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title and also mount a stronger challenge on their return to the Champions League.
