England manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted he is concerned about his defensive options after another injury setback left the team facing uncertainty at right-back during their World Cup campaign.
The latest concern came during England’s 2-0 victory over Panama in New Jersey, where defender Jarell Quansah was forced off after suffering an ankle injury in the second half.
Tuchel described the problem as a “classic ankle twist” and revealed the situation would require further assessment.
The injury adds to growing worries around England’s right side of defence after first-choice right-back Reece James was already ruled as a major doubt for the tournament due to a hamstring problem.
With both players facing a race against time to return, Tuchel acknowledged the challenge ahead but insisted his coaching team must find solutions.
“Naturally! We have another injury in the position,” said Tuchel.
“It will be a tight race for Reece James and it will be a very tight race for Jarell Quansah.
“I’m worried about these two. But it’s our job to find solutions.”
Quansah’s injury came at an unfortunate time after the defender had been trusted with an important role in England’s squad.
His versatility had made him a valuable option, but the latest setback has created another selection headache for Tuchel.
Providing an update on the defender’s condition, the England boss explained that the player was experiencing discomfort but remained hopeful that the issue would not keep him out for a long period.
“He’s in pain. He said he had it before and it was a matter of days. He hopes it stays like this but at the moment it’s just too painful.
“He has his leg up high, compression and ice.”
England’s medical team will continue monitoring both Quansah and James as the tournament progresses.
The situation leaves Tuchel considering alternative solutions, with the manager already facing pressure to maintain defensive stability while chasing World Cup success.
Despite the injury concerns, England’s win over Panama strengthened their position in the group and kept their focus on progressing further.
However, the fitness of their right-back options could become a major storyline as the knockout stages approach.
