Guardiola: Mindset will decide City’s season as pressure ramps up

Pep Guardiola believes mentality, more than tactics, will define the outcome of the season as Manchester City prepare for a relentless run of high-stakes fixtures across four competitions.

With City sitting five points behind Arsenal in the Premier League but holding a game in hand, facing the Gunners again in the Carabao Cup final, heading to Newcastle in the FA Cup fifth round and bracing for a Champions League last-16 showdown with Real Madrid, Guardiola insists the psychological edge will be crucial.

“Always I think when you arrive at two months, now it’s three months, now February is over, March arrive here, everything is a mindset,” Guardiola said.

“It’s okay, one game at a time and do everything to win the game. At the end it is what you have to do.”

Momentum was maintained at the weekend as City edged out Leeds United 1-0 at Elland Road, with January signing Antoine Semenyo providing the decisive moment.

It continued a recent trend, with three of City’s last four league wins coming by a single goal.

Asked whether such narrow margins were sustainable, Guardiola was quick to underline the quality of the opposition and the reality of modern football.

“I said to the players, score five goals today, you know, but they don’t follow me,” he said.

“If it looks easy, this business, you are wrong.

“It’s not easy when they make a lot of transitions and they have the chances.

“Today they didn’t have much. We didn’t have much, but from there, we’ll build up.

“There are some players coming back, Jeremy’s [Doku] back, Erling [Haaland] will be back, and as much as you have players fit, we will do it.

“This team [Leeds] drew at Stamford Bridge, right? And the team that drew at Aston Villa for 88 minutes was winning 1-0, these are two teams in the Champions League.

“It’s an incredible team. Daniel [Farke] had made an incredible team. So it isn’t easy.”

As the calendar tightens and the pressure intensifies, City’s manager is clear: results may be narrow, challenges may be fierce, but with the right mindset, his side believe they can push on for a memorable end to the campaign.
