Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has spoken candidly about the emotional pain of his missed penalty against Norway, admitting the nation’s FIFA World Cup 2026 elimination left him experiencing the “saddest day” of his life.
The Newcastle United midfielder took to social media to address supporters following Brazil’s dramatic 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16, a result that ended the Selecao’s hopes of lifting a record-extending sixth World Cup title.
Guimaraes found himself at the centre of the defining moment of the contest after seeing his first-half penalty brilliantly saved by Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland with the scores still level.
Brazil would eventually pay the price as Norway produced one of the tournament’s biggest upsets to reach the quarter-finals.
The defeat marked Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990 and left players and supporters devastated.
In an emotional Instagram post, Guimaraes admitted he had struggled to find the right words after the heartbreaking loss.
“I’ve written and deleted this so many times I’ve lost count,” wrote Guimaraes.
“I’ve always been here for the victories, so it’s only fair that I step forward and face you all head-on in defeat. Football, which has given me everything I have, is now causing me the worst pain of my 28 years of life.”
The penalty carried enormous significance. Guimaraes stepped forward as Brazil’s third-choice taker after Neymar was on the bench and Raphinha was unavailable, taking responsibility ahead of Vinicius Junior.
His effort was denied by Nyland, making him the first Brazilian player to miss a penalty during normal play at a FIFA World Cup since 1986.
Rather than shy away from criticism, the midfielder accepted full responsibility for the outcome and acknowledged the emotional burden that comes with representing one of football’s most successful nations.
“Missing that penalty kick and being eliminated in the round-of-16 is tough.
“It’s agonizing, it hurts a lot but it will be just another obstacle to overcome. I’ve been through so much that only I know… I’m certain that, no matter how bad I’m feeling right now, it will all pass.”
Despite the crushing disappointment, Guimaraes revealed that returning home to his family helped put the defeat into perspective. The midfielder described an emotional moment with his children that reminded him why his love for football remains unchanged.
“The craziest part of it all was coming home after the saddest day of my life, and the first thing my kids said when I woke up was, “Daddy, let’s play football?” And that’s when I realised that, regardless of whether the days are good or bad, football will always be my great love.”
Brazil entered the tournament among the favourites under Carlo Ancelotti, but their campaign ended far earlier than expected after Norway produced a disciplined display to eliminate the five-time world champions.
Although the disappointment remains fresh, Guimaraes insists both he and the national team will recover from the setback and return stronger for future challenges.
“I accept my responsibility, as I always have, and now is no time for it to be any different.
“I’m deeply saddened by the way it ended, but I’m certain that God knows everything…The dream isn’t over. It lives on in my heart and in the hearts of thousands who are passionate about our country. Now is the time to reflect, regain my strength with my family, and come back even stronger.”
His message has since drawn widespread support from teammates, supporters and members of the football community, with many praising the midfielder’s willingness to confront disappointment publicly.
While Brazil’s World Cup journey ended earlier than anyone anticipated, Guimaraes’ response reflected a player determined not to let one painful moment define his career, believing that resilience—not regret—will shape the next chapter of his international journey.
