Xabi Alonso has admitted he made a costly mistake with Moises Caicedo after Chelsea’s latest injury setback.
The Blues boss revealed that Caicedo was brought back from injury too soon during last week’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Brighton.
The Ecuador international entered the game from the bench, but his return proved premature. Caicedo was subsequently left out of Chelsea’s squad for Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Alonso has now accepted responsibility for the decision and made it clear he does not want to repeat the same error.
“It’s not longer term,” said Alonso about Caicedo’s return date. “But it’s about assessing the risk.
“Last week, we took him too early. I don’t want to make this mistake again.”
The admission comes at a difficult moment for Chelsea, who were unable to overcome Arsenal despite having Caicedo unavailable for the crucial London clash.
Caicedo has quickly established himself as one of the most important players in Chelsea’s midfield, making his fitness a major concern as the season gathers pace.
Alonso’s comments suggest the club will now take a more cautious approach rather than risk another setback by pushing the midfielder back into action before he is fully ready.
The Chelsea manager was also without Levi Colwill against Arsenal, although the defender was named among the substitutes and did not feature.
With injuries beginning to test the depth of his squad, Alonso refused to use the absences of Caicedo and Colwill as an excuse for the defeat.
“It’s easy after a defeat to talk about the players who they are missing,” said Alonso about the pair. “I’m happy with the players we have.
“We have to deal with injuries, Mikel [Arteta] has to deal with injuries. But we need them because they are top players.”
That response underlines Alonso’s approach to the situation. While he recognises the importance of having his leading players available, he does not want Chelsea’s performance to become dependent on who is missing.
The defeat to Arsenal will increase the pressure on Chelsea to respond quickly, particularly with a demanding run of fixtures ahead.
For Caicedo, however, the priority is now clear: recovery rather than a rushed comeback.
Chelsea cannot afford to lose one of their midfield leaders for an extended period by taking unnecessary risks with his fitness. Alonso’s admission shows the lesson has already been learned.
The Brighton match provided three points, but it also exposed the danger of returning an important player before the timing is right.
This time, Alonso appears determined to get the balance right.
Chelsea need Caicedo back, but they need him fit.
And after admitting his mistake, Alonso will be hoping patience now prevents a bigger problem later in the campaign.
