Everton’s Branthwaite eyes England impact after injury hell

Jarrad Branthwaite is ready to make up for lost time after finally putting a frustrating run of injuries behind him and earning another England recall.

The Everton centre-back has endured two difficult seasons on the sidelines, but his strong start to the new Premier League campaign has given him another opportunity to impress on the international stage.

Branthwaite spent three to four weeks in Germany during the summer as part of an extensive programme designed to identify and address the issues behind his repeated injuries.

The 24-year-old has now been rewarded with a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the Nations League matches against World Cup winners Spain, Croatia and Czechia.

For Branthwaite, the recall represents another chance to prove his value after a period when staying fit became almost as difficult as performing on the pitch.

“I sat down with the club after the three or four times where I was picking up the injuries. It was to look at the wider picture, look at the holistic approach of the body essentially,” he said.

“I went over there (Germany) for three or four weeks, working with a team alongside the club, just to assess different things and hopefully that has helped.

“There were a lot of different things looked at like movement patterns, the brain. It was quite complex but fingers crossed it has worked.”

The defender knows better than most how quickly momentum can disappear when injuries keep returning.

His only England cap came in June 2024 when he played 30 minutes as a substitute against Bosnia-Herzegovina during Gareth Southgate’s preparations for the World Cup.

That summer also brought major transfer interest from Manchester United, who failed to meet Everton’s £70m valuation.

Branthwaite then suffered a groin problem that required surgery before a thigh issue delayed his return until October.

The following season brought another setback. Complications from a hamstring injury suffered during pre-season led to further surgery and pushed his campaign back until January.

Even then, his comeback was short-lived. He managed only 10 appearances before another hamstring problem ruled him out in April’s Merseyside derby.

Now, however, Branthwaite has played every minute of the Premier League campaign so far and appears determined to keep that run going.

“It is probably the worst thing as a footballer not to be on the pitch and when it keeps happening it is mentally tough because you are sort of doubting your body and (are) going on the pitch wary of what is going to happen.

“I think now I am in a position where I got managed throughout the pre-season, managed my load well and hopefully I can stay on the pitch this season.”

That consistency has been the biggest change for Branthwaite. Instead of worrying about his next setback, he can now focus on proving why he was once viewed as one of England’s most promising young defenders.

His England recall gives him another stage to do exactly that, with Tuchel now handing him an opportunity to push himself back into the international picture.

After losing so much time to injury, Branthwaite knows the next step is simple: stay fit, stay ready and make every appearance count.
