Patrick Vieira has revealed that Manchester United once came calling for his signature, with the Arsenal legend even holding talks with Sir Alex Ferguson over a potential move to Old Trafford.
The former France international was one of the defining midfielders of Arsenal’s most successful Premier League era after arriving in north London in 1996.
Vieira went on to win three Premier League titles with the Gunners, including the unforgettable 2003-04 campaign when Arsenal completed an entire league season without defeat.
The midfielder captained Arsène Wenger’s side during that historic run and became a central figure in the club’s rise to the top of English football.
However, Vieira has now disclosed that his career could have taken a very different direction.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Arsenal captain revealed that Manchester United were among the clubs interested in signing him, while Real Madrid had also explored the possibility of taking him away from Highbury.
“I had the opportunity to move to Real Madrid a couple of times and I even had…an opportunity to move to Manchester United.
“I had a meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson. Full respect, I couldn’t say no to meeting him because he was an important figure in the Premier League. We met and we talked and he explained to me his vision that he had for Manchester United and the team that he wanted to build.
“He wanted to play me with Roy Keane, [Ryan] Giggs on the left-hand side, David Beckham on the right-hand side and [Paul] Scholes to play behind [Ruud] Van Nistelrooy, so it wasn’t a bad team.
“But I couldn’t leave Arsenal, I was too happy there and we were on the way of building something quite really special for the club and that’s the way it was.
“When you do well, of course there’s teams who are interested and then you have to make a decision. But the decision for me was to stay at Arsenal because I felt the love from the club, from the players and from the fans. Everything was there for me to grow up as a player and to achieve what I wanted to.”
Ferguson’s proposed Manchester United team makes the story even more intriguing.
Vieira could have lined up alongside Roy Keane in midfield, with Ryan Giggs and David Beckham providing width and Paul Scholes operating behind Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Instead, the Frenchman remained committed to Arsenal and continued to build his legacy at the club.
His decision ultimately kept one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders at Highbury during a period when Arsenal were competing directly with Ferguson’s Manchester United for domestic supremacy.
Vieira eventually left Arsenal in 2005, moving to Juventus before spells with Inter Milan and Manchester City brought his playing career to a close.
The former midfielder later moved into coaching and management, taking charge of Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa.
Now 50, Vieira is continuing his managerial career as head coach of Senegal, adding another chapter to a football journey that could have looked very different had he accepted Ferguson’s offer years earlier.
