Ronaldo breaks silence on Portugal squad exit and Jorge Jesus rift

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence on the controversy surrounding his departure from the Portugal squad, revealing that a promise over playing time was at the centre of his frustration.

The Portugal captain left the national team camp in Copenhagen on the eve of their Nations League fixture against Denmark after being left on the bench during the 2-1 victory away to Norway on September 27.

Ronaldo was an unused substitute that night, despite reportedly expecting to feature during the match. His decision to leave the squad soon became a major talking point, with reports suggesting tensions had developed between the veteran forward and coach Jorge Jesus.

The controversy was further fuelled by Ronaldo’s decision not to applaud the travelling Portugal supporters alongside his teammates after the victory in Norway.

In his statement, however, the Al Nassr forward accepted responsibility for that moment and issued an apology to the supporters who had travelled to watch the national team.

But Ronaldo also offered his version of what happened on the pitch, claiming Jesus had told him before the Norway game that he would receive 30 minutes.

According to Ronaldo, that agreement was later abandoned.

“Everyone knows the rest. I warmed up from half-time onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn’t called on,” Ronaldo said. “The coach had broken his word to me.”

The revelation gives a clearer picture of why the Portugal captain was reportedly unhappy following the match.

Ronaldo had spent the second half preparing to enter the game, only to remain on the bench until the final whistle. For a player who remains one of Portugal’s biggest figures, the situation quickly became a flashpoint.

His decision to leave the squad before the Denmark fixture only intensified the speculation.

However, Ronaldo’s statement also attempted to draw a line under his behaviour towards the supporters.

The forward acknowledged that emotions got the better of him immediately after the victory and admitted that he should have shown his appreciation to the fans despite his frustration.

“At the end of the match I only wanted everything to finish with the victory and to be alone. A failing that is solely my responsibility and that should not have happened.

“I apologise to the Portuguese who supported us intensely there, I apologise to the fans, and I apologise to those who, without being Portuguese, may have travelled there to see me and whom I may have disappointed.”

Ronaldo’s apology adds another dimension to a controversy that initially appeared to be centred entirely on his relationship with the Portugal coaching staff.

While the forward has accepted responsibility for snubbing the travelling supporters, his comments about the promised playing time are likely to keep questions surrounding his relationship with Jesus alive.

The timing is particularly significant for Portugal, with Nations League ambitions and the demands of managing a squad containing one of international football’s most influential players.

Ronaldo’s latest statement therefore does more than explain his actions. It provides his side of a story that had quickly become dominated by reports of a dressing-room rift.

For now, the Portugal captain has made his position clear: he regrets how he handled the aftermath of the Norway victory, but he also believes his frustration was understandable after being given an expectation over playing time that was ultimately not fulfilled.
