Edwards proud yet frustrated after Wolves fightback stalemate against Brentford

Rob Edwards expressed mixed emotions after Wolverhampton Wanderers staged a spirited comeback to secure a point against Brentford in their Premier League encounter.

Wolves found themselves two goals down early on, with Brentford dominating the first half and creating several chances that could have put the contest beyond reach.

However, just before the break, Adam Armstrong pulled one back to ignite hope for the visitors.

Building on that momentum, Wolves returned stronger in the second half, with Tolu Arokodare completing the comeback as Edwards’ side took control and pushed for a winner.

Despite the impressive turnaround, Edwards admitted his side left the pitch feeling they could have taken all three points.

“I’m a bit mixed. It’s strange to say it when you’ve been two-nil down, but the feeling is a little bit like, ‘Maybe those are a couple of points that got away’,” said Edwards.

Nevertheless, the Wolves boss was quick to praise his players for their resilience and determination in difficult circumstances.

“But overall, the performance was brilliant and I’m really proud of the players for showing the fight, the courage, the belief and the quality then to get back in the game.”

Reflecting on the early setback, Edwards acknowledged defensive lapses that allowed Brentford to build their lead, particularly from wide areas.

“I think we were playing well anyway.

“There were a couple of mistakes that we had made – we didn’t defend the cross well, we didn’t stop the cross, we didn’t defend the cross – and that was something we’d been speaking about all week with Brentford’s threat as they’re really effective with that.

“That’s why they’re a good team. They can play short, but then if you press and step on, they can go over and that was really frustrating.”

However, Wolves’ belief never faded, and the goal before half-time proved to be a turning point in the match.

“But we felt that we were in the game. We were playing well.

“I thought we had really good moments, we were taking control, but the goal before half time gave everyone that bit of belief.

“We’re only one behind, we’re playing well, and we can get back in this.

”Heading into the second half, Edwards opted for minor adjustments rather than a complete tactical overhaul, a decision that paid off as Wolves dominated proceedings.

“We didn’t need at half-time to change too much, just a little bit of personnel.

“But we didn’t have to change too much tactically, just reinforce a few messages, and I thought we looked brilliant in the second half.”

While the Wanderers remain near the bottom of the table, the performance highlighted their fighting spirit and growing confidence.

As the season edges toward its conclusion, Edwards will be hoping such displays can translate into crucial victories in their battle for survival.
