Brighton have received a timely injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Sunderland, with captain Lewis Dunk and midfielder Jack Hinshelwood available for Saturday’s trip to the Stadium of Light.
Head coach Fabian Hurzeler confirmed that both players are in contention as the Seagulls prepare to return to league action, offering the club a welcome lift after dealing with several fitness concerns.
Dunk’s return is particularly important for Brighton, given his leadership and experience at the heart of their defence. Hinshelwood has also made himself an important option in midfield, giving Hurzeler greater flexibility as his side prepare for a demanding run of fixtures.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Hurzeler confirmed that Dunk would return, while Hinshelwood had resumed training during the week.
“Lewis will be back and Jack trained this week,” said the German in his pre-match press conference.
The Brighton boss suggested that Hinshelwood’s involvement would be managed carefully, with the club keen to balance the midfielder’s return with the demands of the upcoming schedule.
“With him we have to see, it already makes sense to take him into the squad because the next weeks will be busy and we have a lot of games.
Hurzeler made it clear that Brighton would not rush players back simply because they were needed. With fixtures expected to come thick and fast, the manager is focused on ensuring his squad remains fit and available throughout the coming weeks.
“It is about managing the players and understanding who is really available, but not risking anything. Overall, these two players are definitely available.”
The confirmation gives Brighton additional options against a Sunderland side they will need to overcome on the road. Dunk’s availability strengthens their defensive choices, while Hinshelwood’s return to training provides another potential solution in midfield.
However, the Seagulls will still be without Mats Wieffer, Yankuba Minteh and Kaoru Mitoma for the Stadium of Light encounter.
The three players are making progress in their respective recoveries, but none is ready to return to competitive action just yet. Their absence means Hurzeler must continue working with a reduced selection of options as Brighton look to maintain their momentum in the Premier League.
Providing an update on the injured trio, the Brighton manager said they were making progress but remained short of full fitness.
“getting closer, but not fit yet – hopefully we will see them soon back in the squad”
Wieffer, Minteh and Mitoma’s continued absence will be a setback for Brighton, particularly with the club facing a busy period in the calendar. Their eventual returns would give Hurzeler more depth and competition across different areas of the pitch.
For now, the immediate focus is on Sunderland, with Dunk and Hinshelwood’s availability offering a timely lift ahead of Saturday’s fixture.
Brighton will hope the returning duo can make a difference as they seek a positive result away from home. With three other players still working towards full fitness, Hurzeler’s ability to manage his available squad could prove crucial over the coming weeks.
