Richarlison wins praise after Tottenham Hotspur U21s display amid exile

Richarlison has earned widespread praise for his attitude after making a surprise appearance for Tottenham Hotspur’s Under-21s, offering a reminder of his quality despite being frozen out of the senior squad.

The Brazil international scored in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Cheltenham Town in the Vertu Trophy on Tuesday night before converting his penalty in a dramatic shootout that ended 7-6 in favour of the League One side.

However, it was not just his performance on the pitch that caught attention. Cheltenham manager Steve Cotterill was particularly impressed by Richarlison’s professionalism, describing the forward’s attitude as “immaculate” despite his difficult situation at Spurs.

Richarlison, 29, has not featured for Tottenham’s senior team since their opening-day defeat at Brentford on August 22. He was subsequently omitted from the club’s 25-man Premier League squad after being informed that he was not part of the first-team plans for the season.

His future remains uncertain after proposed moves to Trabzonspor and Brazilian side Vasco da Gama failed to materialise. Talks with Everton also collapsed shortly before the English transfer window closed, leaving the former Everton forward without a clear route back into regular senior football.

Tuesday’s appearance at Cheltenham, therefore, provided a rare opportunity for Richarlison to return to competitive action and demonstrate his commitment to the club.

The striker found the net in the 56th minute with a fine first-time finish, prompting Tottenham’s academy players to join him in performing his trademark pigeon celebration.

He also showed a willingness to engage with supporters throughout the evening, signing autographs before and after the match and posing for photographs. On one occasion, he even stopped to sign autographs at the start of the second half.

Richarlison further impressed by shaking hands with Cheltenham’s young goalkeeper Mamadou Diallo after Diallo successfully converted his penalty in the shootout.

Cotterill admitted that the Brazilian’s involvement had been unexpected but welcomed the opportunity for his young players to test themselves against a footballer of his experience.

“No, we weren’t expecting it, but it was good. When I found out he was on the team sheet, I was actually chuffed with that.

“I was really pleased. It gives our lads a glimpse of what it’s like at that top level.

“To be fair to him, with a lot of talk about our lads playing against him, Richarlison’s attitude was immaculate tonight. He was really, really good and his attitude was great.

“He could have easily come down here and thought, ‘I am not too bothered about tonight,’ We had a decent crowd here, but he’s used to playing in front of 60,000 every week — when he gets picked anyway!

“But I thought his attitude tonight was first-class. It was great for our lads to play against someone of his stature. It’s good and I really enjoyed tonight.”

Richarlison also expressed his happiness at returning to the pitch, sharing his feelings on Instagram after the match.

“Happy to do what I love the most in life. I was missing it!”

The forward’s next opportunity to feature could come on Sunday when Tottenham’s Under-21s host Leicester City. With him currently ineligible to play in the Premier League, another academy appearance could help him maintain match fitness while his first-team situation remains unresolved.

Meanwhile, Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi and the senior squad are in Marbella for warm-weather training.

Richarlison’s performance against Cheltenham may not immediately change his standing at Tottenham, but his conduct has earned valuable recognition. For a player facing an uncertain future, his response offers a positive example of professionalism, while leaving questions over when he will next get the chance to represent Spurs at senior level.
