Carrick fumes as Manchester United let Atletico Madrid victory slip away

Michael Carrick believes Manchester United missed a golden opportunity against Atletico Madrid, expressing his disappointment after his side failed to turn promising spells into a positive result in the UEFA Champions League.

The United manager insisted victory had been within reach, but admitted his team failed to make the most of their chances after a difficult start to the encounter.

United struggled to settle early on, putting themselves under pressure before gradually finding their rhythm. Carrick felt his players responded well to the setback, recovering their composure and growing into the contest as the match progressed.

However, just when the Red Devils appeared to be gaining control, missed opportunities and a controversial red card complicated their efforts to get back into the game.

Reflecting on the result, Carrick made it clear that United had expected more from the performance.

“We have the feeling that victory was within our grasp. We could and should have gotten more out of it.

“The start of the match obviously put us in a tricky spot, but I think we pulled ourselves together well as the game went on.

“We started to take control in the second half, then there was Bruno [Fernandes]’s chance, followed by the red card, which I thought was unjustified.

“I’m really disappointed that we weren’t able to make the most of our opportunities.”

Carrick’s assessment highlighted the fine margins that shaped the contest. While Manchester United initially found themselves on the back foot, the manager believed their response offered enough encouragement to suggest a better outcome was possible.

The second half proved particularly frustrating for the English side, who began to assert themselves and create opportunities to change the direction of the game.

Bruno Fernandes’ chance stood out as a key moment in Carrick’s analysis, with the United boss believing his team should have capitalised on the opening. Instead, the opportunity passed without delivering the breakthrough they needed.

The subsequent dismissal added to United’s frustration, with Carrick openly questioning the referee’s decision. The manager’s disagreement with the red card reflected his belief that the incident had unfairly disrupted his side’s momentum at a crucial stage.

Despite his criticism of the decision, Carrick also acknowledged that United had failed to take responsibility for their own missed opportunities. His disappointment was rooted not only in the circumstances of the dismissal but also in his team’s inability to convert their improved performance into a more rewarding result.

For Manchester United, the defeat raises fresh questions about their ability to turn periods of control into decisive moments on the biggest European stage.

Carrick will know that a stronger start and greater efficiency in front of goal could have changed the narrative. His players showed signs of recovery as the match developed, but those improvements ultimately counted for little without the clinical finishing required to make them matter.

The United manager’s comments underline a familiar problem: competing well for stretches is not enough when opportunities to influence a match are wasted.

With the disappointment of the Atletico Madrid defeat still fresh, United must now focus on learning from the missed chances and contentious decisions that shaped the evening. For Carrick, the frustration is clear — his side believed they could get more from the game, but failed to deliver when it mattered most.
