Liverpool defender Ronald Araujo believes the Reds are heading in the right direction but has warned that the team must maintain its hunger for improvement ahead of Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Arsenal.
Liverpool have found their rhythm in recent weeks, winning five consecutive matches across all competitions. Their latest success came against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, where they secured a place in the quarter-finals following a penalty shootout victory.
However, the challenge gets significantly tougher at Anfield this weekend, with reigning Premier League champions Arsenal arriving in search of another important result.
Despite Liverpool’s impressive recovery, Araujo insists there is still plenty of work to be done. The defender believes the team’s early-season struggles were never a true reflection of its potential, pointing to the manager’s philosophy and the quality within the squad as reasons for his confidence.
“There’s no doubt we’re in a good moment,” Araujo told Liverpoolfc.com to preview the clash with the Gunners. “Personally, I’m convinced about the team that we have.
“Perhaps we didn’t get the best of starts but, given the team that we have and the work and the philosophy the manager has for us, I was convinced that the team would continue to grow.
“We’re in that development phase and it’s great because that means that there is still room for improvement.
“So, we know we can give a lot more and we’re working very hard to do that. It’s a lovely moment but we have to keep going – we can’t be satisfied.
“Now we have a really big challenge in front of us this weekend against a big rival, but we’re playing at home with our fans and we’ll give everything to get that victory.”
Arsenal head into the contest after defeating Everton last weekend, a result that moved them level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City.
Araujo knows the scale of the assignment facing Liverpool, acknowledging the experience and quality of Mikel Arteta’s side. Nevertheless, he believes the Reds have enough quality of their own to make life difficult for the visitors.
“It’s a tough game. We’re going to be playing against the Premier League champions, Champions League finalists, a team that has been put together over many years.
“But we also have our own weapons. It will be fantastic. It’s a fantastic challenge and I’m sure that, with hard work and the effort we’re going to put in, we can bring joy to our fans.”
The Liverpool defender will also be looking to build on his impressive performance against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Reds’ previous Premier League fixture.
Araujo was named Carlsberg Player of the Match after Liverpool’s 2-0 victory, with his remarkable header tackle emerging as one of the standout moments of the encounter.
The defender threw himself into the challenge to prevent Brighton from threatening Liverpool’s clean sheet, using his head to make contact with the ball after going to ground.
Reflecting on the incident, Araujo explained that his willingness to put his body on the line comes naturally from his passion for the game and his commitment to the team.
“Ultimately, it was just a solution. I’d thrown myself on the ground and I used my head.
“I’m very passionate and that’s how I live football – I’ve been that way always. I experience football this way and it was just a solution.
“Whatever I need to do to help the team, I need to be prepared to do it. Given I’d gone to ground and the ball was there, I used my head and got a touch on the ball.
“It was brilliant but that’s part of my job, my style and I’ll always give everything.”
With confidence growing after five straight victories, Liverpool now have an opportunity to make another statement against one of their biggest rivals. But Araujo’s message is clear: the recent results are encouraging, not a reason for complacency. The Reds must deliver another strong performance if they are to extend their winning run and keep the points at Anfield.
