Carragher warns Tottenham Hotspur despite De Zerbi’s winning run

Jamie Carragher has challenged Tottenham to improve their attacking output despite their recent resurgence under Roberto De Zerbi, insisting that better chance creation will be essential if they want to take another step forward.

Spurs have given their supporters reasons for optimism after recording three consecutive Premier League victories, capped by Saturday’s convincing 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace.

The result marked Tottenham’s first three-game winning streak in the league since February 2025 and lifted De Zerbi’s side into the top half of the table.

After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, the north London club are beginning to show signs of recovery. However, Carragher believes their recent results should not disguise the need for significant improvement in the final third.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, the former Liverpool defender acknowledged Tottenham’s progress but stopped short of declaring them completely back to their best.

“I think they’re back; I don’t think they’re so back.

“I think they were always going to start picking up results; too many good players, too good a manager.”

Carragher pointed to Tottenham’s victory over Crystal Palace as an example of why he remains cautious. Although Spurs secured all three points, both goals came from set pieces rather than sustained attacking creativity in open play.

The pundit also revisited their earlier victory against Coventry, which he discussed on Monday Night Football, arguing that Tottenham had again managed to get the job done without producing a particularly impressive attacking display.

“In this game [the win over Palace], there were two goals from set pieces; talk about them maybe, still not creating an awful lot in open play.

“You go back to the game they won against Coventry, we did on the last Monday Night Football; again, it wasn’t a great performance, got the job done, again some goals from outside the box, so they probably want to create better chances than what they are doing so far, even in these wins.”

For Carragher, the immediate priority is to build consistency rather than demand spectacular performances. Tottenham’s recent struggles at home have made their latest results particularly important, with the team needing to restore confidence and make their stadium a difficult place for visiting sides.

He believes the improvement in results is encouraging, even if their performances still leave room for development.

“But I think for Tottenham, it’s just about winning, especially at home.

“The home record of late has been absolutely atrocious, so it’s green shoots.”

De Zerbi’s arrival has brought renewed attention to Tottenham’s prospects, but Carragher’s assessment highlights the difference between collecting results and developing a consistently dangerous attacking side.

Three consecutive wins represent a welcome shift in momentum. The next challenge for Spurs is to turn that momentum into performances that offer more threat from open play and establish them as a more complete Premier League outfit.
