Former Manchester United head coach Erik Ten Hag has warned that the club could suffer relegation from the Premier League if they fail to turn around their poor run of form.
The Red Devils have endured a disappointing start to the 2026/27 season, picking up only seven points from their opening nine Premier League outings.
Their only win this season came in the 5-2 win over Ipswich Town on matchday two and they are winless since, recording four draws and losing four times.
Their woes was compounded last weekend when they were beaten 2-0 by Chelsea in a game that also saw defender Lisandro Martinez shown his marching orders after two bookings in quick succession.
It is Manchester United’s worst run of form in 38 years and they are now winless in nine games across all competitions, where they have only scored six times and have conceded 18 goals in the process.
Speaking during an interview, Ten Hag revealed that relegation could become a real possibility if the club’s form does not change in the coming games.
“In the Premier League it’s certainly possible, because all the teams are simply strong”, the Dutchman said.
“They’re all strong squads, all good managers. And if you end up on the wrong side once and you really get into that vicious circle — yes, then it can become very, very difficult.”
Manchester United were without a major trophy in six years before Ten Hag’s arrival in 2022 and he led the club to two domestic trophies during his time in charge.
Since then, they are yet to win any other silverware, coming close in their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the 2025 Europa League final.
“Before we arrived, six years without winning a trophy. Look where they are now”, Ten Hag concluded.
Manchester United return to action on Tuesday when they face Italian side AS Roma, hoping to end their winless run.
