Retired Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos has tipped Arda Guler to play an influential role in the club’s future, hailing the young Turkish star’s talent, mentality and growing importance under Xabi Alonso.
Guler has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of Real Madrid bringing Alonso on board, featuring in 16 games across the Champions League and La Liga. He has started 14 of those outings and has nine goal contributions (3G, 6A) to his name.
Speaking in an interview with Sport1, Kroos offered glowing praise for the 19-year-old, who has done well to make the most of the opportunities that have come his way this season.
“I’m happy that Arda Guler is getting significantly more playing time this year for the first time, because he deserves it for his footballing quality, and he’s a player we can count on for the future.”
Kroos also took time to address comparisons between himself and the youngster, emphasizing that there were not too many similarities between them so the Turkey international couldn’t be considered as his direct replacement at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“Arda is also a different player than me. His best position is much more attacking than mine, so he’s not at all my successor. But overall I’m happy because he’s a good guy.
“I’ve played with him. He has a very delicate touch, which he has already used very effectively at Real Madrid this season.
“That’s why I hope he continues to get regular playing time, because it’s the only way to improve. I’m sure that then he’ll be able to leave his mark on Real Madrid for many years to come.”
