Manchester United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy insists he’s not yet focused on a long-term role at the club despite guiding the Red Devils to a crucial Europa League victory over PAOK on Thursday.
The Dutchman has now secured two wins and a draw against Chelsea since taking charge, following Erik ten Hag’s sacking. Amad Diallo scored United’s two goals, to secure their first Europa League victory of the ongoing campaigns.
Ruben Amorim will take over as United’s new head coach on Monday, following his final game as Sporting manager, while Van Nistelrooy will lead United in one more Premier League match against Leicester City.
Asked about his future at United following Thursday night’s win, Van Nistelrooy remained tight-lipped about potentially working with Amorim and didn’t reveal whether any conversations had been had.
“I think that Ruben, what he is saying, his focus is on [Sporting against] Braga and I focus on Leicester,” Van Nistelrooy said.
“I think that’s a great one for now. And that shows that we’re focused on the day-by-day job and get the maximum out of the team. So let him focus on Braga, I’ll focus on Leicester. I will see after that.
“I’m only busy with one thing in my mind. I want my last game as an interim, I want to prepare it as good as I can and give the players everything they need to get the best performance out of them and, hopefully, get three very important games keep them at Old Trafford and that’s my absolute focus. And other than that, I don’t look too far ahead to be really honest, it’s too important.”
Given his exploits for the club as a player and more recently, as interim manager, Van Nistelrooy’s long-term stay in any capacity will certainly delight many fans. However, it remains to be seen how the situation will pan out after Amorim’s arrival.
