Champions League: Gyokeres delivers Arsenal verdict after Slavia Prague victory

Viktor Gyokeres is enjoying life in front of goal, and his latest Champions League performance offered another reminder of the growing influence he is having in Arsenal’s attack.

The Swedish striker delivered a goal and an assist as the Gunners secured a 2-1 victory over Slavia Prague, extending their impressive run in the competition and strengthening their position in the league phase standings.

Gyokeres was instrumental in Arsenal’s first-half display, producing a superb through ball to release Noni Madueke for the opening goal before getting on the scoresheet himself shortly before the interval. His well-taken finish capped an impressive individual contribution and gave Mikel Arteta’s side a two-goal advantage heading into the break.

The performance also extended Gyokeres’ recent run of form, taking his tally to five goal involvements in his last five appearances. For a forward expected to provide a consistent attacking threat, that return represents an encouraging spell as Arsenal continue to compete on multiple fronts.

Speaking after the final whistle, the striker expressed his satisfaction with the result and his personal contribution, although the hosts’ late response prevented him from enjoying the victory without reservations.

“I feel very good. Obviously, I’m happy with the win and to contribute to the two goals.

“So, a good feeling in the first half – and then obviously in the second half, with how that went, maybe the feeling isn’t as good right now. But overall, if you look at the first half, it’s a good feeling.

“It’s my job as a striker and of course I want to contribute every game when I’m on the pitch and want to be involved as much as I can in attacks. Today felt very good, like I said, especially in the first half.”

Gyokeres was also unwilling to separate his goal from his assist when reflecting on which contribution gave him greater satisfaction. Instead, his comments underlined the importance of being involved in Arsenal’s attacking moves and making a difference whenever he gets the opportunity.

His influence is becoming increasingly significant as the season progresses. Five goal contributions across five matches highlight a forward finding ways to affect games, whether through his finishing ability or his capacity to create opportunities for teammates.

Arsenal’s victory in Prague also strengthened their Champions League campaign. The North London side moved to 10 points from four matches, leaving them third in the league phase table and firmly positioned among the leading teams.

However, Gyokeres knows there is still room for improvement despite the encouraging results. The striker acknowledged the team’s progress in Europe and domestic competition but insisted that Arsenal must continue raising their standards.

“So far we’ve had a good run in the Champions League and in the league as well.

“At the stage we’re in right now, we’re in a good spot, but I think we’re all clear on what we can improve and what we need to do to take the next step.”

For Arsenal, the challenge now is to maintain that momentum while turning promising performances into consistent results. For Gyokeres, the immediate objective is equally clear: keep contributing goals, creating opportunities and giving the Gunners another dependable attacking option as the campaign gathers pace.
