Niko Kovac has described Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 victory over Real Betis in the UEFA Champions League as well-deserved, admitting his side had to work hard to overcome a difficult opponent.
Dortmund secured an important result against the Spanish visitors, but the performance was far from straightforward. Real Betis proved organised and difficult to break down, forcing Kovac’s men to find solutions against a compact defensive structure.
Speaking to DAZN after the match, the Dortmund head coach explained that his team initially looked to create openings through Julian Ryerson on the wing. However, Betis’ disciplined 4-3-3 formation made it difficult for the hosts to turn promising moves into clear opportunities.
“We created some promising plays after finding Julian Ryerson out wide. Betis was very compact in its four-three-three formation.”
Kovac was also keen to underline the quality of the opposition, insisting Betis’ presence in the Champions League was no accident. Their experience and organisation presented Dortmund with a serious examination, particularly during a first half in which the German side struggled to impose itself consistently.
“It was obivious to everyone that this isn’t a team that accidentally stumbled into playing in the Champions League, but one that takes the field with very good, experienced players. This wasn’t exactly an easy task for us.”
However, Dortmund found another gear after the break. Kovac felt his players improved considerably in the second half, showing greater purpose and determination to secure the victory. The result was particularly valuable as the club continues its pursuit of a top-eight finish in the competition.
“In the second half, we played much better. We had to work hard, but the win is well-deserved and important for us.”
The Dortmund boss also highlighted the points requirement facing his team, suggesting that a strong return will be necessary to finish among the Champions League’s top eight.
“To finish in the top eight, we need seventeen or eighteen points. Now, we’ll see what happens when we go to London.”
Beyond the result, Kovac provided an update on striker Serhou Guirassy, who experienced discomfort in his thigh during the encounter. The coach was hopeful the problem would prove minor, although further assessment would be needed before determining the extent of the injury.
“Serhou Guirassy felt some discomfort in his thigh. We’ll see if it’s more than a strain, which I don’t think it is. We hope he’ll be back for the first game after the international break.”
Kovac also praised Karetsas for the attacking energy he brought to the team, particularly his understanding with Fabio Silva in the forward line.
“Karetsas added attacking energy and worked well up top with Fabio Silva.”
With an important victory secured, Dortmund can now turn their attention to their next Champions League assignment in London. Kovac will be encouraged by the second-half response, but Guirassy’s fitness remains an issue to monitor as the club looks to maintain momentum in its European campaign.
