Sheffield Wednesday avoid further points deduction amid EFL review

Sheffield Wednesday have received a small but significant reprieve after confirmation that no additional points will be deducted this season.

It brings a moment of clarity during a turbulent campaign for the Championship side.

The Owls have faced serious financial challenges in recent months. Delayed wage payments triggered multiple EFL sanctions.

Matters escalated further when the club entered administration as efforts to secure a new owner continued.

On the pitch, the damage has already been severe. Wednesday are effectively resigned to relegation to League One after an 18-point deduction took effect this season.

However, moving the situation forward, the EFL and its Club Financial Review Panel have now ruled out further sporting punishment linked to regulation breaches for the 2025/26 period.

“Following a recommendation by the Club Financial Reporting Unit, supported by the club, the Club Financial Review Panel decision confirms that no further practical sporting sanctions should be applied for these breaches,” a statement from the EFL read.

“The League notes and welcomes its decision not to deduct further points from the club.

“The club entering in Administration in October 2025 , alongside the conclusion of separate Independent Disciplinary Commission proceedings for breaches in 2024/25 , has resulted in deductions of 18 points which have taken effect in the current season.”

They added: “The EFL now remains focused on supporting the Administrators of the club to progress a sale in an orderly manner.

“On exit from Administration, the League will agree an appropriate business plan to enable the club to move forwards. It remains important that this happens at the earliest opportunity in order to end the current uncertainty surrounding its future for its staff, supporters and wider community.”

For now, Sheffield Wednesday can at least plan the remainder of the season knowing no further points penalty lies ahead. Attention now turns to stabilising the club off the pitch and securing a sale that offers a clearer future.
