Chelsea complete dramatic comeback to snatch draw at Newcastle United

Reece James and Joao Pedro struck in the second half as Chelsea staged a stunning comeback to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in Saturday’s early Premier League kickoff.

Nick Woltemade’s brace in the first half had given the home side a two-goal lead, before the Blues produced a brilliant response in the second half.

Newcastle United headed into the clash on the back of a 2-1 win over Fulham in their last match and with just one defeat in their last six in all competitions.

Chelsea, meanwhile, had won their last two matches in all competitions, after previously going four matches without a win.

The Magpies were off the blocks early and took the lead in the fourth minute through summer arrival Woltemade, who tapped home after poor defending by the visitors.

The lead became two in the 20th minute as the German once again put the ball past Robert Sanchez, although the goal survived a VAR check for offside.

Chelsea had a goal ruled out in the closing stages of the first half for handball by Neto, before Woltemade missed a chance to complete his hat-trick in stoppage time.

The Blues grabbed a swift goal early in the second half as Reece James scored with a stunning free kick that went in off the post.

The home side were denied a penalty for a foul by Chalobah on the impressive Gordon, before Joao Pedro equalized in the 66th minute.

The Brazilian controlled a ball from Sanchez and went past Thiaw, before firing beyond Ramsdale to make the scoreline 2-2.

Both sides missed chances to score a late winner as they shared the spoils in a thrilling encounter at the St James Park.

Newcastle United remain 11th on the league standings, while Chelsea are fourth after picking up an impressive point.
