England’s Tuchel defends Ben White after Wembley boos

Thomas Tuchel has thrown his support behind Ben White after the defender received a mixed reaction from the Wembley crowd during England’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay.

In what marked White’s return to international duty since his early exit from the 2022 World Cup, the Arsenal defender found himself under the spotlight.

He was met with boos from sections of the crowd upon his introduction and again after scoring his first England goal late in the game.

Despite that breakthrough moment, the night took another twist when White conceded a stoppage-time penalty, allowing Uruguay to snatch a draw and leaving the atmosphere tense at full-time.

Speaking after the match, Tuchel admitted he was not fully aware of the reaction during the game but made it clear he stands firmly behind his player.

“I heard that he was booed,” Tuchel said. “I didn’t hear it actually on the field because I was involved in the changes and instructions, so I didn’t hear it so I think then it cannot be the majority.

“There were some boos and some mixed reception for him, which I am disappointed about because of course we protect our players and he was excellent in camp and he deserved to come on.

“He deserved also to start and got us almost the winner, but I also understood that it happened to other players before here.

“He needs to take it on the chin. We will always protect him and hopefully we can put it behind [us] because he is ready to write some new chapters and we are ready to give him the chance, so hopefully everyone can move on and accept it.”

From a footballing perspective, White’s performance showed both promise and pressure, as he nearly delivered a winning moment before the late setback.

Meanwhile, Tuchel’s comments underline a clear message: backing his players through highs and lows as England continue to build cohesion ahead of future challenges.

As the final whistle fades, attention now shifts to how both player and fans respond, with Tuchel hoping unity will prevail moving forward.
