Guehi salutes Man City duo after historic Anfield comeback

Marc Guehi has singled out Erling Haaland and Gianluigi Donnarumma as the decisive forces behind City’s dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Liverpool at Anfield, a result that also sealed a rare slice of history.

In a high-stakes Premier League showdown, Haaland stepped up when it mattered most, showing nerves of steel to bury a late penalty and swing the contest City’s way.

As the clock ticked down, the momentum briefly shifted again, but Donnarumma produced a stunning, world-class save in the dying moments to preserve the win and secure City’s first league double over Liverpool in 89 years.

Guehi was quick to praise the impact of both stars, starting with the striker’s decisive moment.

“I think it sums him up as a character and as a person,” he said of Haaland.

“Even when he isn’t scoring, he was still doing a lot for us in terms of fighting and holding the ball up and he’s a fantastic player who rightfully deserves the goal so full credit to him.”

Switching focus to the other end of the pitch, the defender underlined Donnarumma’s importance.

“You talk about gamechangers. You’ve got gamechangers one end of the pitch with Erling who was fantastic and then a big pat on the back for Gigi – it was a fantastic save.”

Beyond the individual brilliance, Guehi stressed the collective belief that carried City through a bruising contest on Merseyside.

The win moved the side to within six points of Premier League leaders Arsenal and reinforced confidence within the squad.

“It was great and such an exciting game to play in – it was an eventful game for sure. It was always going to be a tough game. They are an incredible team.

“We showed a different side and a great togetherness. We stuck together and it was so important.”

He added: “The belief has to be there. You come to places like this and it’s very tough, everyone knows that but if you don’t go and believe, what’s the whole point playing in the first place?

“Credit to everyone and to the fans for spurring us on.”
