Liam Rosenior has made his stance on racism in football crystal clear, stating he would remove his Chelsea side from the pitch if racist abuse was heard and no action was taken.
The Chelsea head coach addressed the issue following Tuesday night’s alleged incident involving Vinicius Junior during Real Madrid’s Champions League clash away to Benfica.
The situation has once again put the spotlight on racism in football and the responsibilities of players, officials and governing bodies when such moments arise in elite competition.
Rosenior, who has long been vocal on the subject throughout his career as a player, pundit and now coach, spoke with honesty and perspective when asked how he would respond in a similar scenario.
“It’s one of many responses you can make and again, everything is contextual,” said Rosenior.
“It’s so difficult to make judgements. Racism is a judgement you make based on not having information about that person. I’m not going to make a judgement unless I know the full facts.
“If I categorically heard racism and nothing was done about it, I would take my team off the pitch. I wouldn’t play the game.”
Drawing from his own background, Rosenior also reflected on the importance of unity and understanding within the sport and beyond.
“I’m really lucky. I’m mixed heritage. My dad is black and my mum is white. What I learned in my life is everyone is pretty much the same.
“We have to find a way to realise that and not create more division based on many things, not just race.”
Rosenior’s comments arrive at a time when calls for stronger action and consistency in dealing with racism across European football are growing louder.
His willingness to prioritise values over results underlines a growing sentiment within the game that zero tolerance must be more than a slogan.
