Real Madrid’s Asencio plays down injury fears after scare against Benfica

Raul Asencio has confirmed that he is doing well after being stretchered off during Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Benfica in Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League clash.

The 23-year-old was forced to leave the pitch after he could not continue following a collision with teammate Eduardo Camavinga.

Asencio was stretchered off the pitch in the 77th minute of the encounter and was pictured wearing a neck brace, leaving fans worried over another possible long-term injury.

However, in a message posted on social media, the Spanish defender assured supporters of a swift return to action.

“Thanks for all the messages of support! It was just a scare. Let’s go for the next round. HALA MADRID!!!”, Asencio stated.

Real Madrid went on to win the match 2-1 and progress to the Round of 16 of this season’s Champions League, after also recording a 1-0 win from the first leg.

Benfica took an early lead inside 14 minutes through Rafa Silva, but the 15-time European champions hit back immediately after a strike on the edge of the box by Aurelien Tchouameni

Arda Guler then scored later in the half, but the strike was ruled out for offside in the buildup as both teams headed into the halftime break on level terms.

Benfica wasted several chances to go ahead in the clash and were made to pay when Vinicius Junior struck the winner in the second half.

Real Madrid sealed the win and progressed to the Round of 16, where they will face either Manchester City or Sporting Lisbon, when the draws are conducted on Friday.

Interim coach Alvaro Arbeloa also played down any serious injury by the defender after the match.

“It’s something to do with his neck, it doesn’t seem serious”, Arbeloa said.

Real Madrid will find out their next round opponent on Friday and will shift their attention to regaining the lead at the top of the La Liga standings when they face Getafe on Monday night.
