FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick was left encouraged after his side delivered a commanding display against Villarreal, a performance that sharpened belief as the season enters a defining phase.
Barca swept aside their opponents with authority, producing an all-round showing that underlined growing momentum ahead of a packed schedule featuring the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg, the UEFA Champions League round of 16 and a crucial stretch in La Liga.
The night carried extra significance as it marked Flick’s 100th match in charge of the blaugrana, and the German was keen to focus on more than just the final scoreline.
“Not just with the result, but with the way we played,” he reflected.
“I want to praise the whole team. When we lost the ball, we pressed very well, and that’s what we need.”
While the performance was built on teamwork, Flick reserved special praise for Lamine Yamal, whose hat-trick lit up the contest and provided a reminder of his growing influence.
“He’s [Lamine Yamal] exceptional and he’s here to make people happy. We need his goals to give him confidence. He’s very young and he still has to improve, but everyone knows the quality he has.
“Opponents put two or three players on him and that makes it difficult. Today I’m very happy for him. When he enjoys his football, it’s perfect for him and for us.”
That confidence boost now carries added weight as Barcelona turn their attention to Tuesday night’s daunting task against Atletico Madrid, where they must overturn a 4–0 first-leg deficit to keep their Copa del Rey hopes alive.
“It won’t be easy, we know that, but we’ll give everything,” Flick said. “We have to fight together for 90 minutes, or maybe even more. Anything is possible. We’ll try and see what happens.”
With belief building and key challenges ahead, Barcelona will hope this performance proves to be the springboard for many more nights like it.
