Guardiola challenges Man City ahead of Real Madrid Champions League clash

Pep Guardiola has challenged Manchester City to approach their Champions League Round of 16 first leg clash against Real Madrid with the determination to win.

The Cityzens face the record European champions once again in the knockout stages of the UCL, hoping to advance this time around after their defeat in the previous campaign.

City already claimed bragging rights when both sides met earlier in the season during the league-phase and another win here would move them closer to the quarterfinals.

Speaking ahead of the match, Guardiola warned his side against underestimating their opponents and is optimistic of getting a favourable result from the clash.

“Try to face the opponent and don’t look much at the consequences,” Guardiola stated.

“If we are out, congratulate Madrid, but at least be who you are.

“That is always my concern in the biggest stages in March and April. Sometimes it is not possible because the opponent is better or you cannot impose what you want but at least try it.”

Manchester City finished in the top eight to earn a home advantage in the second leg, while Real Madrid had to go through the playoff round where they defeated Benfica over two legs to book their spot in the Round of 16.

This will be their 16th meeting since 2012 in a fixture that is fast becoming a trend in the competition every season.

“In this kind of competition that is so important. You never know what is going to happen, but for sure good things cannot happen if you are not who you are”, Guardiola added.

“You have to face the game with incredible respect, look in their eyes and this is who we are as a team.”

Manchester City visit the Santiago Bernabeu later today for the first leg, with the return leg set to take place at the Etihad next Tuesday.

The winner of the clash will advance to face either Bayern Munich or Atalanta in the next round, with the former almost assured of a place after a 6-1 win in their first leg clash.
