James Garner has revealed his dream of winning the FIFA World Cup with England after receiving his maiden call-up for this month’s friendly games against Uruguay and Japan.
The Everton midfielder has enjoyed a remarkable campaign so far and was rewarded with a first-ever invitation to the Three Lions squad.
Garner was included in Thomas Tuchel’s 35-man squad for the international friendly matches later this month, giving players the opportunity to impress the coach as they compete to make the final cut for the upcoming World Cup.
Speaking ahead of Friday’s clash against Uruguay, Garner who won the Under-21 European Championship with England in 2023, expressed desire to achieve success at the senior level.
“For me personally, that was probably one of the best feelings I’ve ever had winning the Euros with the under-21s,” Garner said.
“So I just want to go one step further now, hopefully win a trophy for the first team as well.
“I’d hope my call-up would come. I felt, personally, I’ve had a good season, and it’s probably the best I’ve playing since I started, so I was very confident and hoping I would get the call up and I am very grateful that I did.”
The 25-year-old has made 34 appearances across all competitions for Everton this season and his versatility could give him an edge over other competitors in the squad.
Garner can play as a defensive midfielder and can also deputize when needed in a central midfield role.
“I told myself that at the start of the season that it has to be this season where I show everyone what I can do. I think so far I have done”, Garner stated.
Garner will now be eyeing a debut when England face Uruguay at Wembley on Friday night, with a chance to impress Tuchel and stake a claim for a spot in the World Cup squad.
