Under-pressure Rwanda jet into Nigeria for AFCON survival showdown

Rwanda’s national football team has arrived in Nigeria ahead of their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Super Eagles, knowing that anything less than a win could derail their hopes of securing a ticket to Morocco.

The Wasps suffered a devastating 1-0 home defeat to Libya in their last outing, leaving them in a difficult position on the qualification table.

With only a slim chance of advancing, Rwanda faces the daunting task of defeating a high-flying Nigerian side that has already secured their place in the tournament.

Victor Osimhen’s late equaliser in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Benin ensured the Super Eagles qualified with a game to spare. The three-time AFCON champions now look poised to wrap up their campaign in style when they host Rwanda in Uyo.

For Wasps, this encounter is a must-win. Torsten Spittler will need his team to deliver an impressive performance, as they aim to defy the odds against one of Africa’s strongest teams.

Despite the challenges, Rwanda will hope to draw inspiration from their last meeting with Nigeria, which ended in a closely contested draw.

However, the pressure remains heavy, as they must overcome both the Super Eagles and the passionate Nigerian fans at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
