Germany’s Nagelsmann backs Wirtz amid poor form at Liverpool

Julian Nagelsmann has expressed confidence that Florian Wirtz will rediscover his best form at Liverpool , despite a run of inconsistent performances this season.

Wirtz, 22, joined the Premier League champions last summer but has struggled for consistency for most part of the campaign.

The former Bayer Leverkusen playmaker has scored only four goals in the Premier League this season, despite managing 10 and 11 in his last two Bundesliga campaigns.

Speaking ahead of Germany’s clash against Ghana on Monday, Nagelsmann came to the defence of Wirtz and brushed aside criticism faced by the playmaker.

“That was a completely normal situation that affects a young player. He’s someone with emotions and first has to deal with facing criticism. At that intensity, it wasn’t justified”, Nagelsmann stated.

“We grew even closer, had many good conversations where he really opened up. He’s intelligent and very open, and you get a lot back from talking to him.”

Wirtz was in superb form as Germany edged Switzerland 4-3 in their previous encounter last Friday.

The 22-year-old was involved in all four goals, scoring twice and providing two assists, reminding the world of his quality despite an inconsistent campaign.

Dan Ndoye opened scoring for the Swiss, but Jonathan Tah levelled for Germany few minutes later.

Breel Embolo put Switzerland ahead once again in the first half, but Serge Gnabry scored to level matters heading into the break.

Wirtz then scored twice, either side of a goal from Joel Monteiro to give the Germans a confidence-boosting win in the clash.

“He can take a lot from this phase and come out stronger”, Nagelsmann concluded.

Wirtz will be eyeing another inspiring display when he features for Germany in their second friendly match of the international window against Ghana later tomorrow.
