Carrick leaves door open for Rashford’s Manchester United return

Michael Carrick has not ruled out a return to Manchester United for Marcus Rashford, as the England international’s future remains uncertain heading into the summer.

Rashford last played for the Red Devils in December 2024, before joining Aston Villa on loan the following winter.

The 28-year-old then moved to Spain last summer to join champions Barcelona and has enjoyed an impressive campaign so far, scoring 12 goals and providing 13 assists across all competitions.

The Catalan giants have an option to sign Rashford permanently for €30 million, but financial constraints have forced them to consider renegotiating the terms of the transfer. Meanwhile, Manchester United are adamant on opening fresh talks, leading to doubts over the forward’s future.

“I just think there’s decisions to be made in time, really, on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation”, interim coach Carrick said.

“But at this point in time nothing’s been decided. And it will be, because it has to be at a certain point, but at this stage, there’s nothing to say.

“So at the moment, it’s this squad of players, and there’s obviously players on loan, and whatever happens with that later on will happen with that later on.

“But certainly, as a coach and as a leader of a squad, we want to get the best out of everyone as much as we possibly can”, the former Middlesbrough coach added.

“I’m not going on the Marcus individual one because I think, like I’ve already touched on, I think to comment either way this stage it’s not the right thing to do because there’s uncertainties for sure.

“But, for me, as I said, individual players who I’m able to work with in this part of the squad, I enjoy doing that and trying to get the best out of them”, Carrick concluded.

Carrick’s future is also undecided, with Manchester United yet to make a decision on a new permanent manager.

However, should the 44-year-old be handed a long-term role, Rashford could get a way back into the Red Devils team as part of their rebuild ahead of next season.
