Wolves sink closer to relegation after dismal defeat at Leeds United

Wolves slipped closer to relegation from the Premier League after a heavy 3-0 defeat to Leeds United on Saturday, with the hosts boosting their own survival hopes.

The West Midlands side will now be officially relegated if Tottenham Hotspur defeats Brighton and Hove Albion later in the day, ending their eight-year stay.

Wolves trail West Ham United by 15 points with only five games left and have a more inferior goal difference, following their disappointing season which has seen them win only three times throughout the season.

Leeds, meanwhile, boosted their own hopes of Premier League survival with a confidence-boosting win, as they surged up to eight points above the drop zone.

The Whites defeated Manchester United 2-1 on Monday night, with Switzerland international Noah Okafor bagging a brace in that encounter, while Wolves entered the clash on the back of a disappointing 4-0 defeat to West Ham United.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin wasted several chances in the opening stages of the encounter, before James Justin broke the deadlock with a spectacular opener, scoring with an overhead kick.

Few minutes later, two-goal hero in Monday night’s win over Manchester United, Okafor added a second to send the home supporters into jubilant mode.

Wolves improved as the game went on and Ladislav Krejci forced a save from Karl Darlow, before VAR ruled out Adam Armstrong’s goal for offside in the buildup.

Hugo Bueno then fouled Calvert-Lewin in stoppage-time and the England forward capped off another impressive showing with a goal and Leeds third of the game, condemning Wolves to their 22nd league defeat of the season.

Leeds United are now almost assured of another season in the top-flight and can now focus on their upcoming FA Cup semifinal against Chelsea later in the month.

Wolves, meanwhile, will hope to end their season with more points, as they prepare to start afresh in the second division next season.
