Chelsea have sacked head coach Liam Rosenior after fewer than four months in charge, following a poor run of results at the club.
Rosenior was a surprise appointment when he joined the club in January on a five-and-a-half-year deal after the departure of Enzo Maresca and now leaves after only a few months in charge.
The Blues suffered a dismal 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Tuesday night, which proved to be the Englishman’s final game in charge. They equalled an unwanted 114-year record with the defeat, as they lost five league games in a row without scoring a goal for the first time since 1912.
Chelsea have slipped to seventh on the standings and are in real danger of missing out on Champions League football next season.
“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season,” Chelsea said in a statement.
“This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season.”
Rosenior enjoyed a promising start at the club, but results have spiraled in recent outings and the Blues have lost seven of their last eight games across all competitions.
Chelsea also suffered a humiliating 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UCL Round of 16, while they have also suffered embarrassing league defeats to Everton, Manchester City and Brighton.
Rosenior lost six of his 13 league games in charge and won 11 of the 23 games he managed across all competitions (47.8% win rate), losing 10 times and recording one draw.
“As the club works to bring stability to the head coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.”
Calum McFarlane will take over as interim manager until the end of the season, giving them time to search for a proper replacement.
Meanwhile, they face Leeds United in the FA Cup semifinal on Sunday, hoping to reach the final to boost their chances of a silverware.
