West Ham United suffered a major blow in their survival chances after they fell to a 3-1 defeat at Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Hammers would have been aggrieved after they were denied a last-gasp equalizer in their last match against Arsenal by VAR, which had left them two points adrift of safety but their performance this time around left very little encouragement.
It marked their 19th Premier League defeat of the season and their relegation could be mathematically confirmed on Tuesday night, if Tottenham Hotspur get a point in their clash against Chelsea.
William Osula fired wide for the home side in their first real chance of the match, but they took the lead just a few minutes later as Harvey Barnes provided the assist for Nick Woltemade to score his first Premier League goal since December.
Osula then showed great pace to score a second minutes later as Newcastle United raced into an early two-goal lead in the encounter.
West Ham also had chances of their own, but Nick Pope was equal to the task, with the Magpies ending the half strongly.
The second half began in similar fashion to the first, with West Han struggling to break down Newcastle, although Mateus Fernandes had an effort saved by Pope once again.
Then, Osula grabbed his second and Newcastle’s third after great work by Joe Willock in the buildup, dashing West Ham’s hopes of a comeback.
Taty Castellanos then scored a consolation for West Ham United, who ended up losing 3-1 on the day and will now be hoping for a miracle to avoid relegation with just game to spare.
The Hammers face Leeds United in their final game of the season and will hope for a victory, while they will also be hoping Tottenham fail to get at least a point from their final two games against Chelsea and Everton respectively.
