West Ham United suffer relegation despite big win over Leeds United

West Ham United defeated Leeds United 3-0 in their final game of the season on Sunday, but it was not enough to prevent them from suffering relegation as they finished 18th on the standings.

The Hammers went into the final day of the campaign two points behind Tottenham Hotspur in the battle for survival and needed to win while Spurs suffered defeat to survive relegation.

Despite scoring three times to seal a comfortable win, they could not survive the drop as Tottenham defeated Everton 1-0 to condemn them to Championship football next season.

It has been a very difficult season for the Hammers who dismissed Graham Potter earlier in the campaign, although Nuno Espirito Santo could not steer them away from relegation.

The former Conference League winners never really moved out of the bottom three for the entire campaign and are now down to the second division for the first time in 14 years.

Lukas Nmecha wasted an early opportunity to put Leeds United in the lead on Sunday, before West Ham grew into the game and both Pablo and Mateus Fernandes were denied.

With Spurs leading Everton at halftime, West Ham then took the lead just after the hour mark when Taty Castellanos powered home a header from a Jarrod Bowen’s corner kick.

Bowen then got on the scoresheet in the 79th minute to double the advantage, before Callum Wilson added a third goal in stoppage-time to seal victory.

West Ham United ended the season with 39 points, two adrift of safety and will compete in the Championship next season, hoping to seal an immediate return to the top flight.

West Ham United will now join Burnley and Wolves as the relegated teams, while Hull City, who beat Middlesbrough in the Championship playoff final, will join Coventry City and Ipswich Town as the newly promoted Premier League sides.
