West Bromwich Albion striker Aune Heggebo has been handed a two-match suspension after being found guilty of “successful deception of a match official” during the club’s Championship clash with Norwich City.
The Football Association confirmed the punishment following a Regulatory Commission hearing, bringing an extra twist to an incident that had already sparked debate around Heggebo’s controversial goal.
The Norwegian forward will now miss West Brom’s Championship meeting with Burnley on Sunday before sitting out their Carabao Cup trip to Newcastle United on Wednesday.
The FA confirmed the decision in a statement released on Thursday.
“West Bromwich Albion’s Aune Heggebo has been given a two-match ban for successful deception of a match official during their EFL Championship match against Norwich City on Saturday 15 August.
“It was alleged the player acted in an improper manner in or around the 75th minute of the match, whereby he successfully deceived a match official by handling the ball in a direct and successful attempt to score a goal.”
The incident occurred in the 75th minute at Carrow Road, with Heggebo putting West Brom ahead after appearing to use his hand to guide the ball into the net.
Despite the controversy surrounding the finish, the goal initially stood and gave the Baggies a crucial advantage away from home.
Jimmy-Jay Morgan then doubled West Brom’s lead, putting the visitors 2-0 ahead before Norwich mounted a late response.
The hosts pulled one goal back in the first minute of stoppage time, but West Brom held on to claim the victory.
The retrospective punishment, however, means Heggebo’s involvement in the incident has now carried consequences beyond the final whistle.
West Brom have refused to distance themselves from Heggebo and have instead offered a strong defence of their player.
The club said it would seek further clarification from the FA over how players are expected to react in similar situations in the future.
“The club will now write to the FA requesting clarification on how a player is reasonably expected to react should similar circumstances arise in the future.
“Albion remain steadfast in their support of Aune, whose character and integrity have been evident throughout his time at The Hawthorns.”
The statement underlines the club’s belief that the punishment raises questions about how responsibility should be judged when a disputed incident happens during a match.
Heggebo’s suspension leaves West Brom without the forward for two important fixtures as they continue their Championship campaign.
