Matheus Cunha’s late strike sealed a remarkable 3-2 win for Manchester United over Arsenal and continued Michael Carrick’s perfect start to his caretaker career.
The Brazilian struck in the final three minutes of regular time after Mikel Merino had pulled the hosts back on level terms minutes earlier, to seal the win and move them into the top four.
Arsenal had been unbeaten at home this season and were hoping for a win to increase their lead over second-placed Manchester City, who had defeated Wolves 2-0 a day earlier.
For Carrick, he was hoping for a second win in as many matches since taking over as caretaker manager earlier in the month following the departure of Ruben Amorim.
Arsenal started on top and created several chances to break the deadlock, but the best of the chances fell to Martin Zubimendi, who got on the end of a Declan Rice’s delivery and was denied by Senne Lammens.
The deadlock was finally broken as Lisandro Martinez put the ball into his own net under pressure from Jurrien Timber.
However, the visitors were back on level terms after a mistake at the back by Zubimendi allowed Bryan Mbeumo to fire past Davi Raya as both sides went into the break with a 1-1 scoreline.
Five minutes into the second half, Man United took the lead for the first time in the match as Dorgu fired in a stunning effort and great exchange of passes with Bruno Fernandes. The goal was reviewed for handball against the Dane, but was eventually given.
The Gunners then equalized through Mikel Merino, but the Red Devils were back ahead three minutes later when Cunha fired in a superb ball into the bottom corner.
The win moves Man United into fourth place, while Arsenal’s lead at the top of the standings was reduced to four points.
