Carabao Cup: Alonso admits risk after Chelsea survive Leeds United scare

Xabi Alonso has admitted he took a major risk with his Chelsea line-up after making nine changes for their chaotic Carabao Cup clash with Leeds.

The Blues eventually escaped with a thrilling 6-3 victory, but the scoreline does not tell the full story.

Chelsea looked well below their best in the first half and went into the break 1-0 down. Alonso’s heavily rotated side struggled to cope with the intensity of a Leeds team that refused to let them settle.

The Chelsea boss was forced into action at half-time.

Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Reece James and Pedro Neto were introduced as Alonso looked to rescue the tie. The impact was almost immediate.

Within just 20 minutes of the restart, Chelsea had transformed a 1-0 deficit into a stunning 4-2 lead.

For Alonso, however, there was no attempt to shift the blame onto his players. The former Real Madrid boss accepted responsibility for a first half that failed to match his expectations.

“There was so many changes. There was a risk. Things weren’t going the way we planned, so we had to change. I take responsibility with the first half. The crowd were great, with the atmosphere [pushing the players on].”

Alonso’s decision to rotate so heavily was always going to carry danger.

With nine changes to his starting XI, Chelsea fielded a combination that had little experience playing together. Against a Leeds side capable of turning up the pressure, that lack of cohesion quickly became apparent.

The Chelsea boss knew exactly where the problem came from.

“I like that [the substitutes] were ready before the game. They knew they weren’t starting and they were ready to make an impact.”

That readiness proved crucial.

The introduction of several first-team regulars changed the tempo of the contest and gave Chelsea the quality needed to punish Leeds. Palmer, Rogers, James and Neto brought greater control and attacking threat, helping the Blues turn a potential cup upset into an emphatic victory.

Yet Alonso believes the difficult opening was understandable given the circumstances.

“When you put together a team that hardly plays together, it is difficult to play at this level when [Leeds] are intense.”

The result ultimately delivered exactly what Chelsea needed: progression to the next round and a reminder of the strength available in Alonso’s squad.

But the match also exposed the fine margins involved when a manager makes wholesale changes.

Chelsea survived the gamble.

Alonso’s substitutes changed the game.

And after taking responsibility for the shaky first half, the Chelsea boss will know that future rotations may need a little more balance when the opposition is ready to turn up the heat.
