Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has revealed what he likes most about Ronald Araujo after the defender made a strong impression since arriving at the club.
Araujo has quickly settled into his new surroundings, with Iraola particularly impressed by the Uruguay international’s attitude, versatility and willingness to adapt.
The Liverpool manager admitted he felt an instant positive connection with Araujo when they first spoke, believing the defender needed the change and has embraced the challenge with the right mentality.
“I am very happy for him. First time I talked to him, sometimes you talk and you can feel straight away, everything was positive.
“He needed this change and he has come with humility, a big club, experienced player, ready to play positions.
That flexibility has already become an important part of Araujo’s contribution.
The centre-back has been asked to operate at right-back, a demanding role that requires even greater physical output. Despite the increased workload, Iraola says the defender has handled it impressively.
“Physically he has played more minutes than we expected and he is showing robustness.”
Iraola also pointed out the extra demands placed on Araujo when he moves out of his natural central-defensive position.
“He’s in a good place, not cramping – especially when you are a centre-back and you have to play wide at right-back, it’s more demanding.
For Iraola, however, Araujo’s physical condition is only part of the story.
The Liverpool boss has been encouraged by the defender’s character and believes his attitude can help him make an even bigger impact as he becomes more familiar with the club.
“I like his spirit, now I am pushing him to learn a little bit the language, we can use his experience [better] if he can communicate more. It will take some time.”
That final point highlights another area Liverpool are looking to develop with Araujo.
His experience is already valuable, but Iraola believes stronger communication will allow the defender to influence his teammates even more effectively on the pitch.
The adjustment to a new club, new environment and different tactical demands naturally takes time. Yet Araujo’s early progress has given Iraola plenty of encouragement.
His ability to play across the defence has also added another layer of flexibility, particularly with right-back requiring a different physical profile from centre-back.
Rather than easing into the squad slowly, Araujo has already taken on significant minutes and responsibilities.
Iraola’s comments suggest Liverpool are seeing exactly the qualities they wanted from the experienced defender: humility, adaptability, physical strength and a willingness to contribute wherever required.
There is still more to come, particularly once Araujo becomes more comfortable with the language and communication demands inside the squad.
For now, though, Iraola is clearly pleased with the defender’s attitude.
