Humphrey Ker leaves Wrexham board after Hollywood transformation

Humphrey Ker has officially stepped away from Wrexham, ending his formal involvement with the club after playing a central role in one of football’s most remarkable modern transformations.

The 43-year-old actor and comedian has relinquished his position on Wrexham’s board and stepped down as a trustee of the Wrexham AFC Foundation.

Ker was one of the key figures behind the arrival of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds at the Welsh club in 2021, helping pave the way for the Hollywood stars’ takeover of Wrexham.

He subsequently became the club’s executive director and was a prominent figure throughout the hugely successful Welcome to Wrexham documentary series.

His departure, however, has been a gradual process.

Ker stepped away from the club’s day-to-day operations in 2024, but remained connected through his board role and work with the Wrexham AFC Foundation.

He has now decided to bring that chapter to an end.

The decision marks the latest stage of a journey that began when Wrexham were playing in the National League and searching for a route back towards the upper levels of English football.

Ker became closely associated with the club’s extraordinary story as McElhenney and Reynolds transformed Wrexham’s profile both in Britain and around the world.

Reflecting on his time with the club, Ker admitted that leaving was an emotional decision but believes the changing structure of Wrexham means he can no longer contribute in the same way.

“Working for and representing Wrexham and the wider town has been the greatest honour of my life.

“I am proud of the part I have played in the club’s remarkable journey, both on and off the field.

“The way the club has evolved and is now structured has made it progressively harder for me to make a positive contribution so, sad as I am to be leaving, I now feel watching from a distance is the right thing for me.

“I will always be a fan and wish the club, the community and supporters every success. To everyone who has made me feel so welcome, thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

McElhenney and Reynolds also paid tribute to Ker, highlighting the role he played from the beginning of their Wrexham adventure.

The Hollywood owners described him as a key part of the club’s story and made sure to reference one of his most obvious physical characteristics.

“Humphrey has been a key piece of the Wrexham story from day one and his kindness, humour, and height, will be missed but never forgotten.”

Ker’s exit comes as Wrexham continue to operate in a very different world from the one he joined in 2021.

The club’s transformation under McElhenney and Reynolds has turned Wrexham into a global football story, while the documentary has introduced the club and its community to audiences far beyond Wales.

For Ker, though, his connection with Wrexham is unlikely to disappear.

He may no longer have an official position at the Racecourse Ground, but his role in helping launch the club’s Hollywood era has already become an important part of its modern history.

Now, he will watch that journey from the stands rather than the boardroom.
