Carvajal joins Getafe after Real Madrid exit

Dani Carvajal has completed a surprise move to Getafe on a free transfer, bringing his long association with Real Madrid to an end as he prepares for a new chapter in LaLiga.

Getafe confirmed the signing on Tuesday, with the experienced right-back agreeing to a contract that runs until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old became available after leaving Real Madrid in May and will now look to make an impact at a Getafe side currently sitting 14th in the Spanish top flight.

Carvajal’s arrival had been a major talking point in recent weeks, with Getafe president Angel Torres previously confirming that the club were working to secure a deal for the former Spain international.

The agreement gives Getafe access to one of Spanish football’s most decorated defenders without paying a transfer fee, while offering Carvajal an opportunity to continue his playing career in familiar surroundings.

A product of Real Madrid’s youth system, Carvajal spent the vast majority of his career at the Santiago Bernabéu, establishing himself as a key figure during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

His only season away from Madrid came in 2012-13, when he joined Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. His impressive performances earned him a return to the Spanish giants, where he went on to become a regular fixture at right-back.

Carvajal’s achievements at Madrid were remarkable. He won 27 trophies with the club, including six UEFA Champions League titles, cementing his place among the most successful defenders of his generation.

His experience in European football’s biggest matches could prove valuable to Getafe as they look to improve their position in the league standings.

Beyond his club success, Carvajal also enjoyed international glory with Spain. He was part of the national team that won Euro 2024, adding another major honour to an already outstanding career.

The defender’s move to Getafe represents a significant change after years of competing for major honours with Real Madrid. Rather than continuing at the Bernabéu, he will now take on a different challenge with a club seeking greater consistency in LaLiga.

For Getafe, securing a player with Carvajal’s pedigree represents a major addition to their defensive options. His experience, tactical awareness and familiarity with Spanish football could offer important benefits during the remainder of the campaign.

However, the immediate challenge will be helping the club climb from 14th place and finish the season strongly.

Carvajal’s next chapter may not come with the same spotlight or trophy expectations he experienced at Real Madrid, but the move gives the veteran defender another opportunity to compete at the highest level of Spanish football.

After collecting 27 trophies in Madrid and winning the European Championship with Spain, Carvajal now begins a fresh challenge at Getafe, hoping his wealth of experience can make a difference at his new club.
