Tottenham Hotspur’s Maddison ends 526-day wait with stunning goal against Coventry

James Maddison described his return to Tottenham’s starting XI as a dream after scoring a superb goal in a 3-1 victory over Coventry City, lifting Spurs off the bottom of the Premier League table and delivering their first league win of the campaign.

The England international made his first start in 526 days after battling consecutive knee injuries, and he wasted little time reminding supporters of his quality. Maddison produced a moment of brilliance in the 14th minute, guiding a first-time effort over goalkeeper Carl Rushworth before celebrating with his trademark darts celebration.

It was a special moment for the Tottenham playmaker, whose long spell on the sidelines had threatened to derail his momentum. Against his hometown club, however, he looked sharp, confident and influential, emerging as one of the standout performers during an entertaining first half.

Coventry refused to surrender without a fight, though, and Jack Rudoni restored parity just four minutes after the restart. His equaliser sparked a frantic spell as both sides searched for control, raising the stakes in a contest Tottenham desperately needed to win.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side eventually regained the advantage through Omar Marmoush in the 58th minute. However, the victory came at a physical cost, with Tosin Adarabioyo, Andy Robertson and Marmoush all forced off with fitness concerns.

The changes also provided an opportunity for Dejan Kulusevski to make his long-awaited return after 17 months out through injury. The Swedish international received a warm ovation from the crowd, with his comeback adding another emotional layer to an already significant evening.

Ben Davies then settled the contest, although his effort was far from spectacular. His scuffed strike found its way past Rushworth, securing the three points Tottenham had been waiting for and giving Kulusevski the perfect ending to his return.

For Maddison, however, the night was about much more than the result. The midfielder admitted he had hoped to start after discussing the possibility with De Zerbi during the week.

“I hoped [to start].

“I spoke to the gaffer about it this week and just feeling like the right moment for me to go back into the starting XI after a stop-start start to the season.

“I just wanted to play well, show my quality and show what the team’s missed in the last 18 months, or whatever it is since my last start.

“The gaffer asked me to play and said he wanted to enjoy watching me from the side so hopefully I did that. And obviously a goal like that is always nice.”

The strike was Maddison’s first since Tottenham’s 3-1 victory over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League semi-finals at the end of the 2024-25 season. Given the challenges he has faced since then, the significance of finding the net again was impossible to ignore.

Reflecting on the goal, Maddison explained how his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury had shaped his appreciation of the moment.

“They’re the ones you dream of. Without going too deep into it, them dark days last year, recovering from the ACL, you dream of them moments, them goals and that is the light at the end of the tunnel,” Maddison told Sky Sports.

“That is why I was a bit emotional and I felt really proud of Dejan Kulusevski as well because him coming back.

“I knew exactly that feeling of him stepping onto the pitch after that time out, but those moments and goals make it all worth it.”

Tottenham will hope the victory marks a turning point in their season, while Maddison’s performance offers a timely reminder of what they have missed during his lengthy absence. With Kulusevski also back in action, Spurs have reasons for optimism as they look to build momentum and climb the Premier League table.
