Van Dijk reveals how Salah is shaping Liverpool wonderkid Ngumoha

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has revealed Mohamed Salah’s influence on Rio Ngumoha’s development, insisting the teenage winger has plenty more to offer after producing an outstanding performance against Villarreal.

Ngumoha was instrumental in Liverpool’s 4-2 victory at Anfield on Tuesday night, registering two assists as the Reds recovered from a two-goal deficit to claim an important Champions League win.

The youngster has continued to attract attention with his performances this season, particularly after adapting to a role on the right wing despite traditionally operating on the left.

According to Van Dijk, working alongside Salah has played a significant role in helping Ngumoha adjust to the demands of senior football and develop his attacking game.

The Egyptian forward has established himself as one of Liverpool’s most influential players over the years, making him a valuable source of experience for the club’s emerging talents.

“A few senior players [have helped him],” Van Dijk said. “I would say Cody Gakpo is definitely part of that. But everyone has that role in order to help the youngsters in the group, the players who have not had so much experience.

“Everyone is chipping in but for him to work with Mo last year was obviously massive as Mo was one of the best wingers at the club and experienced everything so why not soak in all the information and show it on the pitch and show your own qualities?

“I think he has shown it this season but there is still much more to come.

“He’s pretty electric at times and he showed it again. He was a complete threat constantly and their defender had a tough time.”

Van Dijk’s comments highlight the importance of Liverpool’s experienced players in nurturing the next generation, with Ngumoha already showing signs that he can become a major attacking threat.

His pace, direct running and willingness to take on defenders caused Villarreal repeated problems, while his two assists demonstrated his ability to turn individual brilliance into tangible contributions for the team.

However, the night was far from straightforward for Liverpool’s captain, who admitted that his own performance contributed to the team’s difficult start.

A costly error from Van Dijk helped Georges Mikautadze open the scoring for Villarreal before further defensive mistakes allowed Sergi Cardona to double the visitors’ advantage.

Liverpool faced an uphill battle, but Alexis Mac Allister, Ronald Araújo and Florian Wirtz helped turn the contest around as the hosts fought back to secure the victory.

Reflecting on the match, Van Dijk did not attempt to hide his disappointment with his personal display, instead emphasising the importance of the team’s collective response.

“It was a terrible start,” the Netherlands international said. “I think the saying is you fight an uphill battle and as a defender it is pretty difficult to come back from it. I tried but it was a bad day at the office personally but we did it together with 11 players. We turned it around and that’s the main thing.

“Unfortunately in life these things can sometimes happen. Fortunately it didn’t happen too many times in my Liverpool career but tonight I was not the best. But we won and it’s not about me, it’s all about us. We got the three points.”

The Liverpool skipper’s willingness to accept responsibility offered a reminder that even experienced leaders can have difficult nights. More importantly, the Reds recovered from their early setbacks to produce the response required to win.

For Ngumoha, the Villarreal performance represents another significant step in his development. Receiving guidance from Salah and other senior players could prove invaluable as he continues to adapt to different positions and the physical demands of top-level football.

Van Dijk’s message was clear: the teenager has already demonstrated his potential, but Liverpool believe his best football is still ahead of him.
