Spalletti challenges Juventus to rediscover first-half courage after Lecce win

Luciano Spalletti has challenged Juventus to maintain their attacking ambition throughout matches after his side secured a 2-0 away victory against Lecce on Serie A Matchday 8.

Despite collecting all three points, the Juventus head coach was not entirely satisfied with how his players managed the contest, particularly after the break, when he felt they became less adventurous and allowed the game to lose some of its intensity.

Juventus made a positive start, showing the willingness to take the initiative and create promising opportunities in the opening half. However, Spalletti believes the team failed to carry that same mentality into the second period, with a more cautious approach replacing the proactive football he wanted to see.

The manager praised his players for their overall effort but made it clear that controlling a match should not come at the expense of attacking intent. For Spalletti, the ability to remain organised while continuing to put pressure on the opposition is a crucial part of seeing games out effectively.

“The players put in a very good performance. They were willing to take the game to the opposition and created some promising opportunities in the first half,” Spalletti said.

“In the second half, however, we dropped off a little in terms of how we managed the game. We made fewer positive decisions and showed less courage because we thought we could control the match.

“Lecce changed a few things tactically. You need courage, but without losing your shape. We didn’t give anything away, but we were less proactive in trying to put the game to bed.

“That’s what football is like nowadays, though, and we need to play the way we did in the first half.”

Spalletti’s assessment highlights a key demand for Juventus as they look to build consistency in Serie A: winning is important, but the manner in which a team manages different phases of a match can be just as significant.

Lecce’s tactical adjustments after half-time presented Juventus with a different challenge, requiring the visitors to adapt without abandoning their original approach. Spalletti acknowledged that his team remained defensively solid, but he wanted greater initiative in attack rather than a passive attempt to protect their advantage.

The Juventus boss also stressed the importance of making better decisions under pressure. In his view, the team must recognise when to take control through possession and defensive organisation while continuing to search for opportunities to extend their lead.

The 2-0 result gave Juventus a valuable away win, but Spalletti’s comments suggest that the performance remains a work in progress. His message was clear: the team must combine tactical discipline with the courage to keep pushing forward.

For Juventus, maintaining that balance could prove decisive as the Serie A campaign progresses. Spalletti will want his players to reproduce the energy, attacking intent and positive decision-making they displayed in the first half, while avoiding the drop in initiative that followed after the interval.

The victory over Lecce provided the points, but the manager’s post-match message underlined the next challenge: ensuring Juventus can control matches without losing the ambition to finish them strongly.
