Dirk Kuyt has hailed Fenerbahce’s dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over Liverpool as “another miracle in Istanbul” after his side produced a stunning comeback to claim their first win in the competition this season.
The Turkish giants twice fought back from behind to defeat the Premier League side on Wednesday night, with goals from Mason Greenwood, Archie Brown and Vedat Muriqi completing a memorable result at home.
For Kuyt, the victory carried an extra layer of significance. The former Liverpool forward drew comparisons with the Reds’ legendary 2005 Champions League final comeback against AC Milan, when they recovered from three goals down to win the trophy on penalties in Istanbul. Kuyt joined Liverpool a year after that historic night and knows the significance of the city’s connection with European football.
The result also ended Fenerbahce’s four-game winless run across all competitions and offered a much-needed lift to a team searching for consistency. Kuyt, who took interim charge last week following Ismail Kartal’s resignation after the 2-1 defeat to Galatasaray, credited the players’ unity and belief for their remarkable response.
“It was a very special night, I think not only for me, but everyone who loves Fenerbahce,” said Kuyt, who took charge last week after Ismail Kartal resigned following the 2-1 defeat to rivals Galatasaray.
“We told each other to stick together, to be united. And also to keep believing in ourselves, and that is something [which] I learned from another club [that] means a lot to me, and that was Liverpool, the club we played against tonight.
“So I’m very happy with all the players, I’m very happy with all the people who were involved that we made a miracle tonight.”
Fenerbahce entered the contest under pressure, sitting sixth in the Turkish Super Lig after losing four of their opening 10 league matches. The victory over Liverpool could now provide the turning point Kuyt wants, although the interim boss made it clear that the team must build on the performance rather than rely on one memorable evening.
He insisted that the comeback was the product of determination and attacking intent, not fortune, while highlighting the atmosphere created by the home supporters as a major factor in unsettling Liverpool.
“Although we are in a very difficult situation, we have a chance to bring another miracle in Istanbul,” he said. “And if you get that miracle, things can change in a positive way.
“But the reaction needs to come from us first … If you create that atmosphere, even the best team in the world can get difficulties.
“And I think the win tonight was not an easy win, but it was not luck. I think at the end of the day, we deserved it. We create many chances. We keep pushing and we keep fighting against, in my opinion, one of the best teams in Europe.”
The victory came at an important moment for Fenerbahce, who are preparing for a managerial transition after announcing former Newcastle midfielder Emre Belözoğlu as their new permanent head coach on Tuesday night.
Kuyt revealed that he had already exchanged messages with the incoming manager before the Liverpool encounter, promising to deliver a performance that would give him a positive platform when he takes over.
“After the win over Liverpool, Kuyt added: “He wished me all the best for this game and I said to him, ‘I will make sure the team will have a good performance so you can have a good start.'”
With Liverpool beaten and Fenerbahce celebrating a statement European result, Kuyt has handed his successor an immediate boost. More importantly, the victory has given the Turkish side something to build on as they look to revive their domestic campaign and make their mark in the Champions League.
