Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has not lost faith in his side’s ability to win the La Liga this season despite their recent poor run of form which has seen them struggle to grind out the required results.
Earlier this season, Simeone’s Atletico sat top of the Spanish top-flight after stringing together the longest winning streak in the whole of Europe at the time. They emerged victorious in eight consecutive La Liga matches with that amazing run, extending to fifteen matches across all competitions.
However, they now find themselves down to third on the league standings with Hansi Flick’s mesmerizing Barcelona leading the way while City rivals Real Madrid are in second place. They trail Barca by nine points and Madrid by six.
Atleti’s recent form has been far from impressive with Los Rojiblancos failing to secure a win in their last three La Liga outings. They suffered consecutive losses to Getafe and Barcelona before playing out a 1-1 draw with Espanyol.
Despite his side’s current struggles, Simeone remains optimistic about their chances of piping Barca and Madrid to the title this season as they look to regain some momentum with a win against 15th placed Sevilla on Sunday.
“The team is working well, the focus is now on LaLiga, and we have to compete until the end in the best way,” Simeone told reporters on Saturday.
Asked whether his side were strong enough to contend for the title, he said: “Yes.”
The LaLiga title now stands as Atletico’s sole opportunity to secure silverware this season. They were eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Barcelona earlier this week and were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid last month.
